Nigerians Panic As UTME 2024 Records Massive-Failure
The recently released results of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have sparked mixed reactions due to the abysmal performance of candidates.
According to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), out of over 1.8 million candidates who took the UTME nationwide, only 8,401 managed to score 300 and above. A significant majority, totaling 1,402,490 candidates, fell below the 200 benchmark.

This revelation has ignited widespread concern, with findings by Ireporteronline indicating that over 70 percent of the candidates who sat for the exam did not score up to 200.
A breakdown of the candidates’ performance is as follows:
– Total number of candidates registered: 1,989,668
– Absent candidates: 80,810
– Results withheld: 64,624
– Candidates who scored 300 and above: 8,401
– Candidates who scored 250 and above: 77,070
– Candidates who scored 200 and above: 439,974
– Candidates who scored below 200: 1,402,490
This decline in academic performance has elicited various responses, with some blaming systemic issues within the education sector. Public affairs analysts have criticized the declining standards, attributing it to inconsistencies in government policies and inadequate investment in education.
JAMB’s Public Relations Officer, Fabian Benjamin, defended the examination body, stating that they give every candidate equal opportunity. He acknowledged that although there were technical challenges, efforts were made to resolve them promptly.
He mentioned that the Board constantly evaluates and re-evaluates its processes to identify and address any issues encountered during the examination.
Benjamin emphasized that this year’s performance was better than previous years, pointing out that the percentage of candidates scoring above 200 has increased compared to previous years.
