Russian Embassy in Nigeria has issued a statement addressing recent demonstrations in the country where some protesters were seen waving Russian flags. This clarification comes in response to concerns that the display of these flags might be misinterpreted as an indication of Russian government involvement.

According to Sahara Reporters, over 2,000 demonstrators, including women and children, participated in recent nationwide protests against poor governance in Nigeria. During these protests, some individuals were seen carrying Russian flags and expressing their grievances. There were even calls for military intervention, which intensified the scrutiny surrounding the presence of Russian symbols at these rallies.

The embassy emphasized that the use of Russian flags by these protesters is a personal choice and does not reflect any official stance or involvement by the Russian government. In a statement, the embassy made it clear that neither the Russian government nor any of its officials are involved in or coordinating these demonstrations.

“The Embassy has noted the reports in Nigerian media and the circulation of videos and images in digital media depicting protesters in northern states of the country carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans to Russian President Vladimir Putin,” the statement read.

The embassy further affirmed that “The Government of the Russian Federation as well as any Russian official is not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way. As always, we emphasize that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria.”

While the Russian Embassy expressed respect for Nigerian democracy and the right to peaceful protest, they also cautioned against any potential disruptions or acts of violence associated with these demonstrations. “We respect Nigerian democracy and believe that peaceful demonstrations in conformity with Nigerian law are a manifestation of democracy. However, should these events lead to any disruptions or acts of violence, we strictly condemn them,” the statement concluded.

This response from the Russian Embassy aims to clarify any misconceptions and reassure the public of Russia’s non-involvement in Nigeria’s internal matters.
