Just In: Police Officer Killed By Okada Riders In Violent Mob Attack

during a confrontation with enraged commercial motorcyclists, known as Okada riders.

The incident occurred when the officer, leading a team, responded to a distress call about an accident at WEMCO junction along Mobil Road. The team was dispatched to remove a truck that had struck down an Okada rider. Upon arrival, they were met with resistance from a group of riders who demanded that the truck involved be set on fire.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the tragic event, calling it a senseless act of violence.

 

Sadly, the Okada rider died from the accident, escalating the anger of the riders towards the police. Hundeyin stated, “Upon reaching the scene, the team encountered a large crowd of motorcycle riders. While attempting to evacuate the truck, the officers were attacked by the riders who insisted on torching the vehicle. One ASP, 46 years old, sustained a fatal head injury and died on the spot, while the truck driver managed to escape.”

Five suspects have been arrested, and a manhunt for others involved is underway.
