Themed “Transformation and Interventions: Evolving Trends in Arbitration and ADR Practice in Africa,” the conference attracted top experts, judges, and practitioners who delved into the evolving role of arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in the continent.

Chief Justice of Kenya’s Perspective
In her keynote address, Hon. Justice Martha Koome, Chief Justice of Kenya, underscored Africa’s rich heritage in conflict resolution, urging the continent to blend traditional methods with modern techniques. She highlighted ADR’s significant role in enhancing access to justice, especially in regions with overwhelmed formal court systems.

Koome said, “Long before the establishment of formal courts, African communities used mediation, dialogue, and consensus to settle disputes, fostering social harmony. ADR builds on this heritage, offering faster, more affordable, and less adversarial ways to resolve conflicts.”

She called for the integration of technology and artificial intelligence into ADR, advocating for more inclusive, accessible solutions. She also highlighted the immense opportunities offered by initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and growing foreign investments.

Lagos: Africa’s New Arbitration Hub
Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Lagos State Attorney General, Lawan Pedro, emphasized the importance of arbitration as more than just a dispute resolution tool but a key driver of economic growth and partnerships. Pedro also touted Lagos as a rising arbitration hub in Africa, with institutions like the Lagos Court of Arbitration playing a pivotal role in the city’s growing prominence.

He urged stakeholders to embrace the digitalization and localization of ADR, noting that the ongoing transformation offers unprecedented opportunities for specialization and innovation.

In conclusion, the stakeholders emphasized the need for continuous efforts to establish robust ADR frameworks across Africa, focusing on collaboration and sustainable growth to meet the challenges of the future.
