On Wednesday, the Ogun State Government issued a statement claiming that the NCAA, along with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), had approved the airport for commercial use. The statement further quoted the Senior Project Manager of Craneburg, the construction firm overseeing the project, Nicolas Mfarrej, who claimed the airport was 98% ready for full operations.

Additionally, Ogun’s Consultant on Regulatory Matters, Eng. Oluwole Adeyileka, stated that the airport’s readiness had been positively evaluated by key aviation regulators, adding that the inspection team was impressed by the state’s progress.

However, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu clarified that the agency had not certified the airport. “What took place was not a certification, but an inspection of the ATC and aeronautical equipment. As per the application process, they are only at step three out of five, so certification was never part of yesterday’s activities,” Achimugu emphasized.

This contradicts earlier statements made by Ogun’s state officials. In 2022, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Abdulwaheed Odusile, had indicated that construction on the international cargo airport was nearing completion, with expectations to commence operations by the end of that year. Similarly, in 2023, Ogun’s Governor assured that the airport would be operational in 2024.
