Critics Are Holding Nigeria Back,’ Lawmaker Fires Back At Technology Transfer Bill Detractors

The bill, which aims to harness Nigeria’s population to create jobs, process raw materials, and transfer technology, has already passed its first and second readings in the House of Representatives. Jimbo noted that he was shocked to hear criticism from influential Nigerians, questioning why the bill should not be passed into law.

“These are the very people responsible for driving Nigeria’s development, yet some are actively standing in the way of progress,” Jimbo said. He emphasized that countries like China and the USA have advanced technologically because they prioritize national progress, something Nigeria must do as well.

He further stressed that if the bill receives President Bola Tinubu’s approval, it could significantly boost local production and reduce imports by more than 50%.

NISER’s Director-General, Prof. Antonia Simbine, also highlighted the importance of the project, stating that proper policy coordination is key to economic development. She pointed out that Nigeria’s federal system often leads to fragmented policies, which hinder progress, making the proposed research project timely and necessary.

As the bill moves forward, Jimbo remains hopeful that it will catalyze a transformation in Nigeria’s technological landscape.
