According to Naija News, the tragic incident occurred at a charity event organized by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, widely known as Obijackson, a philanthropist and a prominent member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The annual event, hosted by the Obijackson Foundation, aimed to support the less fortunate but descended into chaos as a large crowd rushed to grab rice.

Tochukwu Ikenga, police spokesperson in Anambra State, verified the death toll in a statement released on Sunday morning following a visit to the injured at the hospital. Superintendent Ikenga noted that the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono, reported additional injuries resulting from the stampede, though no specific details were provided.

The police chief expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who died and wished a swift recovery to the injured. He also stated that investigations into this “unfortunate incident” are ongoing.

Ikenga added, “The Police Command is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the people of Anambra by preventing crime, effectively responding to emergencies, protecting vulnerable communities, and fostering a sense of security.
