Anambra Community Supports Military Deployment For Christmas Safety

The community has faced a spate of kidnappings and killings, particularly along the Nimo-Neni road, prompting many residents to leave the area. Concerned for the safety of those returning home, the Igwe-in-Council expressed their support for a military presence that now conducts round-the-clock patrols.

Addressing concerns from some youth leaders who alleged that the soldiers were targeting them, the palace security coordinator, Mr. Stephen Gbulie, clarified that the military’s role is strictly for community security. He reassured that the soldiers are not setting up checkpoints or harassing residents.

“The military was deployed due to the rising insecurity in Nimo, where unknown gunmen have taken up residence, conducting attacks and kidnappings. This decision was made collectively by the community elders, not just by our traditional ruler, Igwe Maxi Ike Oliobi,” Gbulie stated.

He recounted recent incidents, such as the shooting of a resident named Sunday Olisa while fleeing from gunmen. In another instance, a local was kidnapped at Egbengwu Nimo, only to be released after a ransom of ₦7 million was paid. The gunmen have also sent written threats, including one to a South Africa-based resident, demanding that he acquire firearms for them or face the destruction of his family home.

Gbulie emphasized: “With Christmas approaching, many of our sons and daughters from abroad are returning, but security concerns had forced many to flee again. The deployment of soldiers aims to guarantee a safe and peaceful celebration for all.”

The community leadership has also communicated the situation to the Anambra State government and security agencies, recognizing their limitations in addressing threats posed by heavily armed criminals.

The Igwe-in-Council remains dedicated to restoring peace and safety in Nimo, urging residents to collaborate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities.
