Okija, and Abuja should serve as a critical wake-up call for Nigerian leaders. According to Naija News, 22 individuals from the Okija community in Anambra State were confirmed dead in a stampede that occurred during a rice distribution event on Saturday.

On the same day, an undisclosed number of fatalities were recorded in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, during a food distribution organized by a local Catholic church. This incident followed a heartbreaking event just days earlier when 40 people, predominantly children, died at a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a post shared on X, Ezekwesili emphasized that these stampedes highlight the severe economic crisis facing the country. She pointed out that many Nigerians, particularly those in low and lower-middle-income families, are suffering from widespread food poverty.

Ezekwesili expressed, “The tragic deaths of these children seeking free food should convey the most urgent message to the self-serving leaders in Nigeria’s public offices. My heart goes out to the families affected by the three stampedes during charity food distribution events in Ibadan, Okija, and Abuja.

“Nothing has underscored the severity of economic distress in our nation quite like these tragic incidents occurring during what should be a celebratory season. It’s a stark reality that many Nigerians are enduring significant food poverty, particularly among our most vulnerable populations.

“It is disheartening to see the well-meaning organizers of these events misjudging the number of people who would seek assistance in this time of famine. Additionally, our ineffective emergency response system has repeatedly failed to address such tragedies.

“These repeated losses of children in search of food should resonate as a powerful message for our self-indulgent leaders. But will they actually listen?
