Jeff Bezos Joins Liverpool Ownership Group In Major £6bn Club Deal
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has become a part-owner of Liverpool Football Club after joining a consortium that has agreed to acquire a minority stake of approximately 30 per cent in the Premier League giants.
According to Ireporter Online, Liverpool’s majority owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed the agreement with 1892 Holdings, an investment consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia. Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is also part of the group.
Under the agreement, Bhatia is expected to become Liverpool’s vice-chairman and join the club’s expanded board, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. Bezos, however, will not occupy a position on the board.
FSG described the arrangement as a strategic minority investment and stressed that it would continue to retain majority ownership and control over the club’s operations.
The agreement also provides the consortium with an option to increase its stake in Liverpool in the future. While this could potentially place the investors in a stronger position should FSG decide to sell its controlling interest, no such decision has been announced.
The deal reportedly places Liverpool’s valuation between £5 billion and £6 billion.
FSG said the investment was not driven by financial difficulties, explaining instead that it was attracted by the consortium’s international business, technology and investment connections, particularly across India and Asia.
FSG president Mike Gordon said the consortium shared the ownership group’s long-term vision for Liverpool and understood the values associated with the club.
Bhatia also expressed confidence in the partnership, saying the consortium was proud to invest in Liverpool and held FSG and its achievements at Anfield in high regard.
The investment represents Bezos’ first confirmed venture into sports ownership. The billionaire, who stepped down as Amazon chief executive several years ago, has previously been linked with possible investments in major American sports franchises.
With an estimated fortune running into hundreds of billions of dollars, Bezos is also the owner of aerospace company Blue Origin, investment firm Nash Holdings and The Washington Post.
The latest agreement comes 16 years after FSG acquired Liverpool for £300 million in 2010. Since then, the club has enjoyed significant success, including ending a three-decade wait for the Premier League title in the 2019-20 season, winning another league title in 2024-25 and securing its sixth European Cup in 2019.
Liverpool also recorded its highest-ever revenue of £703 million for the 2024-25 financial year, further highlighting the club’s growing commercial strength.
