2027: ‘Why Peter Obi Can’t Become President’ – Dino Melaye
African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Dino Melaye has argued that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi may struggle to secure the Nigerian presidency because of what he described as his predominantly regional political appeal.
According to Ireporter Online, Melaye made the remark during an interview on the KAA Truths podcast while discussing the political prospects of major contenders ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The former Kogi West senator described Obi as a “regional champion,” arguing that Nigeria’s presidency requires a candidate with broad national acceptance rather than one whose political influence is perceived to be concentrated in a particular region.
Melaye maintained that ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has a stronger national outlook and, in his assessment, stands a better chance of becoming president.
Although he acknowledged that his comments about Obi could generate controversy, Melaye said his position was based on his interpretation of Nigeria’s political landscape.
He also drew comparisons with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whom he described as an exceptional and highly accomplished leader but argued that his regional political identity limited his ability to secure the presidency.
Melaye said, “Atiku is a nationalist. Obi is a regional champion. It may sound awkward. It may sound offensive but Obi is a good man and he’s my friend. I have respect for him but he’s a regional champion and no regional champion in this country will ever be president.”
He further described Awolowo as a brilliant and cosmopolitan politician but claimed that his strongest electoral support remained concentrated in the Southwest during his presidential contests.
The remarks come as political activities and alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, with several opposition figures positioning themselves as alternatives to President Bola Tinubu.
