reiterating its respect for freedom of religion as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution.
NYSC Sets the Record Straight
In a statement by Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the NYSC explained that the affected corps members failed to participate in mandatory Community Development Service (CDS) activities and were absent during a December 2024 headcount in Atiba Local Government Area of Oyo State.
“For clarity, the queries were issued because the corps members did not participate in their scheduled CDS activities and were absent during a headcount conducted to verify corps members in the local government,” the statement read.
Misinterpretation of Events
The NYSC stressed that the queries were part of its corrective measures to ensure adherence to its Bye-Laws, which govern corps members’ conduct.
“It is unfortunate that this issue has been misrepresented to suggest a connection with a Christmas Carol event,” the statement noted. “The NYSC operates within the framework of its regulations, which guide corps members’ activities and stipulate penalties for infractions.”
The organization further disclosed that the corps members traveled out of state without proper authorization between December 16, 2024, and January 6, 2025.
Compulsory CDS Participation
The NYSC emphasized that participation in CDS activities is mandatory and a prerequisite for obtaining the Certificate of National Service.
“Community Development Service is integral to the NYSC program, and all corps members are required to participate throughout their service year,” the statement added.
Call for Accurate Reporting
The NYSC appealed to journalists to verify information before publication to avoid creating unnecessary religious or social tensions.
“The public is urged to disregard the erroneous claims circulating online. Such misinformation only seeks to cause undue apprehension,” the NYSC concluded.
