Power Struggles Under Adelabu: Is The Penkelemesi Crisis Set To Worsen
Not long ago, I found myself celebrating what seemed to be a notable improvement in the power sector. to my Akobo neighborhood in Ibadan. However, that fleeting period of hope has since faded into disappointment.
Now, we are back to the uncertainty of electricity supply. Just when we think we’ve been blessed with power, outages interrupt our efforts to enjoy the basics we once took for granted. Evenings that begin with light often end in darkness.
During the brief spell of reliability, having electricity at night could stretch into the morning hours, providing a rare sense of normalcy. But those days are now a distant memory, replaced by a dismal performance that leaves residents frustrated and disillusioned.
I was moved to write this article after hearing a TV participant boast about a drastic improvement in electricity supply in his area. Curious, I reached out to friends in my neighborhood to see if they were experiencing the same improvement. Just as I made the call, the power went out, leading me to seek answers through Facebook instead.
My skepticism towards the nation’s power sector has grown over time. Years ago, I abandoned public power supply and turned to generators, candles, and torches to meet my energy needs. I endured this for months in Ekiti State under the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, where I found solace in being free from the unpredictable outages.
The promises made during the Buhari administration about metering every household within months to justify tariff hikes now seem hollow. It’s been over a decade since those claims were made, and yet, many homes are still without meters.
When Chief Bayo Adelabu, a fellow native of Ibadan, took on the role of Minister, some believed his brief period of improvement was driven by political ambition for the forthcoming governorship elections. But as power supply returns to unreliable lows, one wonders what his next move will be.
Even in the new year, residents faced extended periods without electricity. A personal incident stands out: just as my grandson settled in to watch his favorite cartoon, the power went out again after a brief respite. On Monday, we had hoped to enjoy President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Presidential Media Chat, but like many other moments, the light failed us, robbing us of the experience.
It’s a peculiar mess that continues to haunt us.
