Council on Climate Change Secretariat, revealed that a strategic roadmap is being developed to address mangrove conservation, reforestation, afforestation, and protection.

Dr. Maduekwe, who also serves as the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Change, emphasized that the roadmap is aligned with Nigeria’s commitments at COP27 and the 2025 theme of amplifying nature-based climate solutions.

She explained, “This roadmap will outline actionable steps, set clear goals, and create a strategic investment plan to ensure the long-term sustainability of our environmental initiatives.”

Highlighting the importance of mangroves, Maduekwe noted their role in coastal resilience, livelihood enhancement, and fostering sustainable community development. The roadmap will include technical site visits to nine Niger Delta states to assess the current state of mangroves and develop effective adaptation strategies.

“The roadmapping process involves town hall meetings, with the first taking place in Calabar, Cross River State, on February 4th. This will gather stakeholders, including Commissioners of Environment, international partners, and community leaders, to discuss financing options and opportunities for mangrove conservation,” she added.

Maduekwe further revealed that the initiative aims to raise $4 billion in sustainable finance, focusing on mangrove conservation and protection. She stressed the importance of having a robust policy document to attract climate finance grants and overcome challenges related to mangrove afforestation and conservation.

With the symposium on arts, climate change, and mangroves scheduled for March in Lagos, the government is poised to engage stakeholders and raise awareness on the urgent need for environmental preservation through collaborative efforts.
