Suspended Tsanyawa/Kunchi Rerun Elections Ignite Calls For Electoral Reforms
Bold Security Operation Ends Kidnap Nightmare In Sokoto
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the rerun elections in Kunchi/Tsanyawa constituency, Kano State, initially scheduled for February 3, 2024, due to reported disruptions by suspected political thugs…Bold Security Operation Ends Kidnap Nightmare In Sokoto
in 10 polling units.
Despite heightened security measures and preparations by INEC, the elections faced significant hurdles. Eyewitnesses report that thugs stormed polling units, hijacked election materials, and disrupted the process, overwhelming security presence at the scene.
Mr. Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), confirmed the suspension, citing disruptions, irregularities, and the abduction of election officials as the primary reasons. He emphasized that the decision aligns with Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.
This marks nearly a year without representation for the Kunchi/Tsanyawa constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly. Residents are growing increasingly frustrated, expressing concerns about the violation of their rights and democracy, which have left them without governance for over 11 months.
During discussions with DAILY POST, local residents voiced their dissatisfaction, calling for the Kano State Government and INEC to expedite the election process. Ashiru Abdulhamid Yan Dadi noted the negative impact on the community, highlighting unemployment and lack of basic amenities forcing many youths to migrate in search of opportunities.
Dauda Jawwara, a young politician, lamented the lack of state and federal representation, stressing the disconnection from governance that has left the constituency marginalized.
In 2023, the Appeal Court annulled the election of Garba Yau Gwarmai of the APC and mandated a rerun following a petition filed by NNPP candidate Yusif Ali Maigado. Despite promises for a new date, recent reports indicate little to no progress in preparations for the rescheduled election on January 18, raising doubts about its feasibility.
