several others still missing. The attack, which took place on January 24, 2025, saw insurgents storming the military base in gun trucks, leaving destruction in their wake.
Sources confirmed the attack lasted for several hours, with insurgents setting fire to vehicles and buildings. Among the casualties were the battalion’s commanding officer, two senior officers, and the base medical director. A military source disclosed that many soldiers remain unaccounted for, with others sustaining injuries.
Malam-Fatori, located near the Nigeria-Niger border, is home to many displaced by Boko Haram’s violence. The attack has raised concerns about the safety of civilians in the area. While some bodies have been recovered, the full extent of the missing soldiers remains uncertain, as security forces continue their search.
This attack follows a similar raid on the Forward Operating Base in Damboa, Borno, where Boko Haram militants killed several soldiers. The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a Boko Haram faction, has claimed responsibility for both assaults, releasing images showing their fighters targeting the military facility during the Damboa attack.
