This decision comes as telecom operators, including MTN and Airtel, cited financial challenges from naira devaluation and rising operational costs, initially requesting a 100% tariff increase. However, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the 50% hike on January 20.

Once implemented, Nigerians will face new rates, including N16.5 per minute for calls (up from N11), N6 per SMS (up from N4), and N431.25 for 1GB of data.

Public Backlash

The increase has sparked widespread criticism, with many citing the dire economic conditions. Stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have condemned the move, urging Nigerians to reject what they describe as an additional burden. The NLC has threatened to mobilize workers to boycott telecom services in protest.

Similarly, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) labeled the tariff hike “outrageous,” warning it will exacerbate the already harsh living conditions of Nigerians.

Activist Reactions

Prominent activist Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the OBIDIENT Movement Worldwide, called on the government to halt the hike, describing it as poorly timed and detrimental to the economy. “A 50% tariff increase at this time is akin to a final blow to the already struggling economy,” he stated, highlighting the adverse effects on sectors like SMEs and education.

Dr. Tanko urged the NCC and the Ministry of Communications to reconsider, suggesting a more gradual increase, such as 15%, instead of the current proposal.

Nationwide Protest Plans

Many Nigerians are now mobilizing for protests to demand a reversal of the tariff hike. Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore revealed ongoing discussions with NLC leaders to organize nationwide demonstrations against the “unjust” increase.

Comrade Timothy Onyilo, another activist, criticized the decision, particularly its impact on students. He argued that the tariff hike would hinder academic research, further straining students already grappling with high living costs.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, demanding a reversal of the decision or face mass protests. NANS stressed that affordable internet access is crucial for bridging the educational gap and warned the hike would deepen the digital divide.

Calls for Service Improvement

Meanwhile, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed the telecom industry to prioritize service improvements, including better network reliability and speed, alongside the tariff adjustments. While acknowledging the economic challenges faced by telecom operators, the FCCPC emphasized that “consumer interests remain paramount.”

As tensions rise, Nigerians await further developments, with protests appearing increasingly inevitable.
