Giwa-Ogunbanjo at the Federal High Court in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on a five-count charge of forgery and obtaining money under false pretenses.
One of the charges reads:
“That you, Benjamin Chukwuemeka Nwobodo, on the 15th day of January 2014, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of Nine Million Naira (₦9,000,000.00) from one Wilson Ikeani Igwe under the false pretense of selling three plots of land situated at Emene, Enugu State, a pretense you knew to be false. By doing so, you committed an offense contrary to Section 1 of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Related Offenses Act, 2006, and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges. Following the plea, EFCC counsel Chikezie Raymond Edozie requested a trial date and that the defendant be remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.
However, Nwobodo, representing himself, made an oral bail application, which the court approved under strict conditions. These include:
- Providing two sureties, each in the sum of ₦25 million.
- One surety must own property within Enugu metropolis.
- The other must be a blood relation and present three years of tax clearance.
- Both sureties are to submit an affidavit of means and have their details verified by the EFCC within seven working days.
- Nwobodo must deposit his international passport with the Deputy Court Registrar.
The court permitted the defendant to leave on self-recognizance but warned he must meet the bail conditions within ten days or face arrest and detention.
The case was adjourned to May 13 and 14, 2025, for trial.
