National Onion Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) on Monday.

Kyari highlighted alarming reports of a potential 40% reduction in onion production this season, primarily due to the distribution of adulterated seeds to farmers. Investigations revealed that a NOPPMAN member was responsible for supplying the substandard seeds.

“I commend the association for their swift action in identifying the culprit and handing him over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and accountability,” Kyari said.

To address the crisis, the minister outlined both immediate and long-term measures, including the urgent distribution of high-quality seeds and fertilizers to affected farmers. The government also plans to establish modern storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure stable market supply.

“We are expediting efforts to create modern storage facilities, which will significantly reduce post-harvest losses and stabilize the market supply of onions,” Kyari stated. Additionally, innovative preservation methods, such as using rice straws for packaging and improved cold storage techniques, were discussed to enhance onion storage and longevity.

Kyari emphasized that to stabilize supply and prices, the government is prioritizing the use of warehouses for efficient storage and distribution of available onion harvests.

These measures are expected to alleviate the immediate impact of the shortage and contribute to stabilizing onion prices in the coming months.
