The Nigerian naira traded at different rates against the United States dollar in the parallel foreign exchange market on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, with the gap between the black market and official rates remaining noticeable.

According to information obtained by IReporter Online from Bureau De Change (BDC) operators, the dollar was sold for ₦1,415 at the Lagos Parallel Market, while buyers purchased the currency at approximately ₦1,405.

This means that individuals looking to sell one US dollar could receive about ₦1,405, while those seeking to purchase the same amount could pay around ₦1,415, depending on the dealer and prevailing market conditions.

Meanwhile, figures attributed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the official exchange rate stood within a range of ₦1,340 to ₦1,353 during the period under review.

The difference between the official and parallel market rates highlights the continued variation in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, where rates can change based on demand, supply and other market factors.

The CBN does not recognise the parallel or black market as an official foreign exchange channel and has consistently advised individuals seeking to conduct legitimate forex transactions to use authorised financial institutions.

It is also important to note that exchange rates can fluctuate frequently. The actual rate available to customers may therefore differ from the figures reported, depending on the location, dealer and prevailing market conditions at the time of the transaction.
