Group Vows To Oppose NLC Protest Against Telecom Tariff Hike
The Nigeria Citizen Watch for Good Governance (NCWGG) has announced plans to counter the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over its scheduled nationwide protest on February 4 against the recent telecom tariff hike…READ MORE…
In a statement issued on Thursday, NCWGG President, Collins Eshiofeh Idowu, criticized the NLC’s stance, arguing that the approved 50% increase in telecom tariffs by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is essential for the survival of the telecom industry, which plays a crucial role in job creation and economic growth.
The group accused the NLC of economic sabotage, insisting that the labor union had failed to consider the financial challenges facing telecom operators.
“The protest is unwarranted. Has the NLC considered the millions of direct and indirect jobs that would be at risk if the telecom sector collapses? What happens if Nigerians can no longer make calls or access the internet due to financial constraints in the industry?” Idowu stated.
The NCWGG further declared its readiness to mobilize members across all 36 states and the FCT to resist any demonstrations against the tariff hike.
The group maintained that the increase is necessary to sustain the industry, improve telecom infrastructure, and ensure quality and uninterrupted services for Nigerians.
