Kaduna PDP Insists INEC Must Kick Out Defected Lawmakers
The Kaduna State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare vacant the seats of three Kaduna State House of Assembly members and one House of Representatives member who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).…….READ MORE
Describing the move as a “brazen betrayal of trust,” PDP Publicity Secretary, Maria Dogo, issued a statement on Sunday condemning the defections as both unconstitutional and unacceptable.
Citing Sections 68(1)(g) and 109 of the 1999 Constitution, Dogo emphasized that any legislator who defects from the party on whose platform they were elected must vacate their seat.
“The constitution is clear. Any lawmaker who defects must immediately vacate their position. We call on the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the Kaduna State House of Assembly to declare these seats vacant and notify INEC to conduct fresh elections,” she stated.
The PDP assured constituents that it would invoke all constitutional provisions necessary to reclaim its mandates, stressing that there is no internal crisis or division within the party’s national leadership.
“While we acknowledge the right to freedom of association, these defections undermine the trust of the electorate. The PDP remains the preferred choice in Kaduna State, and we will pursue all legal avenues to recover our mandates,” the statement added.
