Electoral Scandal Fallout: INEC Confirms Hudu Yunusa-Ari No Longer Receives Salary
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the embattled Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, has been removed from its payroll, following his suspension…Electoral Scandal Fallout: INEC Confirms Hudu Yunusa-Ari No Longer Receives Salary
in 2023 over controversial actions during the state’s governorship election.
Yunusa-Ari made headlines last year after he illegally declared Aishatu Binani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Adamawa governorship election, even though the results were still being collated and incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was leading.
INEC spokesperson, Rotimi Oyekanmi, confirmed to Saturday PUNCH that Yunusa-Ari had not been receiving any remuneration from the commission since August 2023 when he was charged in court over electoral misconduct. “He ceased to be on our payroll once the legal proceedings commenced,” Oyekanmi stated.
Yunusa-Ari, who has been at the center of a storm of political controversy, was subsequently arraigned in the State High Court in Yola. His prosecution, however, has been marred by frustration, with INEC’s legal team accusing the Nigeria Police Force of impeding justice. According to Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the lawyer handling the case, the police have ignored multiple court orders and a bench warrant to produce Yunusa-Ari in court, leaving the entire legal process stalled.
“We are deeply frustrated by the police’s failure to execute the court’s instructions,” Jacobs lamented, emphasizing that INEC and its chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, have made every effort to see Yunusa-Ari prosecuted.
As the legal and political storm surrounding Yunusa-Ari continues, INEC is facing mounting pressure to ensure accountability and transparency in the electoral process.
