Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for increased attention to the safety of fresh fruits and beverages consumed by Nigerians, following a laboratory test conducted on orange juice prepared by his wife, Dolapo Osinbajo.

According to Ireporter Online, Osinbajo disclosed the incident while speaking at the Open Day for Gardeners’ Seminar in Lagos, where he highlighted concerns about possible contamination of agricultural produce and fresh beverages.

Osinbajo explained that his wife had stopped consuming carbonated drinks several years ago and switched to freshly squeezed orange juice, which she regarded as a healthier alternative.

However, he said she subsequently began experiencing unusual headaches despite regularly drinking the freshly prepared juice.

After other possible causes of the headaches were reportedly ruled out, a sample of the orange juice was taken to a laboratory for analysis, according to the former vice president.

He said the test result indicated that the freshly squeezed orange juice was not fit for human consumption.

Osinbajo said the laboratory findings raised broader concerns about substances that could potentially contaminate fruits and other agricultural products before they reach consumers.

He referenced chemicals allegedly used in some farming and preservation practices, including calcium carbide and other toxic substances, warning that exposure to such materials could pose serious health risks.

The former vice president stressed that the appearance of fresh fruits should not automatically be taken as evidence that they are safe for consumption.

He also cautioned that beverages described as natural could still contain harmful substances introduced at different stages between production and consumption.

Osinbajo therefore called for stronger regulation and enforcement across the agricultural and food supply chain, alongside greater public awareness about food safety.

He urged relevant authorities and members of the public to pay closer attention to how fruits and other fresh produce are grown, processed, transported and prepared for consumption.

His comments have renewed discussions about food safety standards and the need for effective monitoring of agricultural products to protect consumers.
