Ondo State Deputy Governor, Olayide Adelami, has urged inmates in correctional facilities across the state to use their time in custody to acquire vocational and educational skills that can help them build productive lives after their release.

According to Ireporter Online, Adelami gave the advice on Saturday during a visit to the Olokuta Medium Security Correctional Centre in Akure, where he interacted with inmates and offered encouragement, spiritual support and welfare assistance, including food items.

The deputy governor, who also serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Prison Fellowship Nigeria, encouraged the inmates to reflect on their past experiences and prepare themselves for a more productive future.

He urged them to seek God, strengthen their faith and take advantage of the rehabilitation and training opportunities available within the correctional facility.

“Please seek God, strengthen your faith and use this opportunity to acquire skills that will make you self-reliant when you regain your freedom,” Adelami said.

He further advised the inmates not to allow their past mistakes to determine the course of their future, but instead use their experiences as lessons for making better decisions.

“Do not allow the mistakes of your past to define your future; let them become lessons that will guide you towards a better life,” he added.

Adelami stressed that vocational and educational programmes could play an important role in helping inmates successfully reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.
