Fenerbahce-Lyon Clash: Guendouzi, Greenwood Punished Over Fight

Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood have been sanctioned by UEFA following their involvement in the heated confrontation that occurred after Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off victory over Lyon.

According to Ireporter Online, Fenerbahce defeated Lyon 2-1 in the second leg in France to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory and advance in the competition. However, tensions escalated among players and members of both coaching staffs after the final whistle.

Guendouzi, a former Marseille player, was handed a four-match ban from UEFA club competitions, although two of those matches have been suspended for one year. He was also fined €50,000.

UEFA said the France international was sanctioned for insulting individuals present at the match, provoking spectators and breaching its basic rules of decent conduct.

Greenwood, who joined Fenerbahce from Marseille during the summer, received a one-match suspended ban and was fined €30,000 for violating UEFA’s basic rules of decent conduct.

Lyon goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira received a five-match suspension, with two matches suspended, after being found guilty by UEFA of serious assault.

Both Fenerbahce and Lyon were also fined €50,000 over the conduct of their respective teams during the incident.

Fenerbahce has said it is reviewing UEFA’s disciplinary decisions and will take the necessary steps regarding arbitration and appeal procedures.

Guendouzi had been subjected to boos from Lyon supporters during the match and appeared to respond to the crowd after the final whistle. He was later seen shouting “Allez l’OM” towards a pitchside camera.

The midfielder subsequently said he felt disrespected by supporters, claiming that insults had also been directed towards members of his family.

The sanctions add another layer to a contentious Champions League encounter that ended with Fenerbahce progressing but both clubs facing disciplinary consequences over the post-match confrontation.
