Serena and Venus Williams suffered a dramatic defeat on their return to the US Open women’s doubles, losing to Chan Hao-ching and Maya Joint in a thrilling three-set encounter at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday.

According to Ireporter Online, the American sisters were beaten 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (10/7) after surrendering a commanding 5-0 advantage in the deciding 10-point tie-break.

The defeat marked the Williams sisters’ first Grand Slam doubles appearance since the 2022 US Open. The pair, who have won 14 major doubles titles together, including two US Open championships, were given a rousing reception by the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd.

Chan and Joint took control early by winning the opening set 6-3, but Serena and Venus responded strongly in the second set. They produced 20 winners to force a tie-break and eventually level the match, setting up a dramatic decider.

The Williams sisters appeared to have victory within reach after racing to a 5-0 lead in the deciding tie-break. However, Chan and Joint mounted a remarkable comeback, winning the crucial points needed to overturn the deficit and secure a 10-7 victory.

Serena, 44, was also making her first appearance at Flushing Meadows since returning to Grand Slam singles competition at Wimbledon, where she suffered defeat against Joint in a highly anticipated Centre Court encounter.

The sisters’ appearance generated significant excitement inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, with fans loudly celebrating their strongest rallies, volleys and overhead smashes throughout the contest.

Despite the defeat, the match provided another memorable chapter in the careers of the Williams sisters, who remain among the most successful doubles partnerships in tennis history.
