A campaign spokesman for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Kenneth Okonkwo, has claimed that opposition presidential candidates have agreed to support the former Vice President in the 2027 presidential election.

Okonkwo made the claim during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, saying the opposition had come together and settled on Atiku as its preferred presidential candidate.

“I can tell you that all the opposition candidates have come together and chosen Atiku Abubakar,” the actor-turned-politician said.

According to Ireporter Online, Okonkwo said the opposition coalition adopted the ADC as its political platform on July 2, 2026, with several prominent opposition figures, including the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, present at the meeting.

He argued that Atiku’s position as the opposition’s leader was the reason he formally challenged President Bola Tinubu to a presidential debate.

“Atiku challenged Tinubu to a debate officially because he is the leader of the opposition,” Okonkwo said.

Okonkwo also commented on the political status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which Obi reportedly joined after leaving the ADC.

He claimed that the NDC was, based on a court judgment, legally recognised as a political association rather than a registered political party, adding that the ruling was currently being challenged on appeal.

“NDC came into opposition on December 10 through a court order. Legally speaking, it’s a political association and not a party, according to the judgment of the court, and they are now appealing,” he said.

The ADC chieftain further criticised Obi’s decision to leave the coalition platform adopted by the opposition, alleging that the former Anambra State governor had been persuaded to move to the NDC.

Okonkwo maintained that the coalition had collectively chosen the ADC as its platform and that Obi was present when the decision was reached.

“Why did I say that Atiku is the leader of the opposition? The opposition came together to form a coalition, and they chose the ADC on July 2, 2026, and all of us were there, including Peter Obi,” he said.

He further alleged that Obi’s move to the NDC had placed him in a difficult political position, describing the development as a setback for the opposition coalition.
