D’Tigress Land In Berlin Ahead Of 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have arrived in Berlin, Germany, ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which is scheduled to begin on Friday.

According to reports, the five-time African champions were welcomed in Berlin by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Ambassador Ita Enang, alongside officials of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.

The team travelled to the German capital after completing their final training camp in Zaragoza, Spain, where head coach Rena Wakama and her players intensified preparations for the tournament.

During the Zaragoza camp, D’Tigress played warm-up games against Mali and Puerto Rico as part of their final preparations for the global competition.

The camp was the latest stage of an extensive preparation programme that had previously taken the team to the United States, China and Tenerife in Spain for training sessions and friendly matches.

The Nigerian side will now use their remaining time in Berlin to complete preparations before officially beginning their World Cup campaign.

D’Tigress have been drawn in Group B alongside South Korea, Hungary and France. They will open their campaign against South Korea on Friday before facing Hungary on Saturday. Their final group-stage fixture will be against France on Monday.

Nigeria enter the tournament as the reigning African champions after defeating Mali 78-64 in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The team also made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by becoming the first African basketball team to reach the quarter-finals of the Games.

D’Tigress’ best performance at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup came in 2018, when they reached the quarter-finals and finished eighth overall.

With preparations now reaching their final stage, Wakama’s team will be hoping to build on their recent continental and Olympic achievements as they begin another quest for global success.
