OPay Makes Fresh Promises To Nigerians Amid Shutdown Rumours

Financial technology company OPay has commenced legal action against individuals it accused of spreading a false notice claiming that it would shut down operations in Nigeria from September 1, 2026.

According to reports, the fintech company has also engaged relevant regulatory and security agencies over the publication, while assuring customers, merchants and business partners that its operations remain fully active.

OPay made the clarification on Wednesday during a live town hall meeting organised in response to concerns generated by the purported shutdown notice circulating on social media.

The meeting brought together journalists, OPay ambassadors and social media influencers as the company moved to address the growing concerns and reassure Nigerians about the continuity of its services.

Speaking during the event, OPay’s Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Daniel Adekunle, said the company was concerned about the potential impact of misinformation on customers who rely on its platform for financial transactions.

Adekunle stressed the importance of accountability when information is shared publicly, noting that unverified claims about financial institutions could undermine public confidence.

He said, “It’s important that when information is shared across public spaces, there has to be accountability and responsibility.

“We want to make it clear. OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere. The message circulating is false. There is no decision to shut down operations in Nigeria, and there is no indefinite leave.

“It’s September 2, and we’re still here.

“Any message circulating that OPay is going on leave should be regarded as false information.”

The technology executive urged customers to verify information through credible channels before acting on claims circulating on social media, particularly where financial decisions are involved.

Adekunle also said OPay had continued to expand its physical presence in Nigeria rather than reduce its operations.

“This year alone, we opened over 26 new offices across Nigeria, and our teams are on the ground,” he said.

Meanwhile, OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed that the company had formally contacted relevant regulatory, law enforcement and security authorities over the controversial publication.

Rokosu said the message was designed to appear as though it was an official communication from OPay, despite the company not being responsible for it.

He maintained that such misinformation could create unnecessary panic among customers, undermine confidence in the financial institution and potentially expose users to financial losses.

“The information was presented as an official OPay communication. It was capable of causing fear, causing financial loss and undermining confidence in the financial institution,” Rokosu said.

He added that the Department of State Services and the Police were investigating the matter, while OPay was cooperating with the authorities and had provided evidence to assist the investigation.

According to Rokosu, the company had commenced legal proceedings against those responsible for the publication and would pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels.

“OPay is taking legal action against those responsible. We must sue them and ensure the law takes its full course. There would be no impunity,” he said.

Rokosu further warned that freedom of expression does not protect individuals from legal consequences where their actions allegedly involve unlawful conduct, malicious falsehoods or deliberate attempts to cause financial harm.

He stressed that the company’s response was not intended to suppress criticism but to ensure that individuals do not use social media to spread information capable of causing harm without accountability.

OPay consequently urged Nigerians to disregard the shutdown claim and continue using its services normally while investigations into the origin and circulation of the false notice continue.
