NPFL: Why Sporting Lagos vs Ikorodu, Three Other Matchday 2 Games Were Postponed

Four fixtures in Matchday 2 of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season have been postponed due to venue-related issues and the involvement of some clubs in continental competitions.

According to Ireporter Online, the affected fixtures are Sporting Lagos vs Ikorodu City, Katsina United vs Rivers United, Enyimba vs Shooting Stars and Warri Wolves vs Enugu Rangers.

The Lagos derby between Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, September 6 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 30 at 4pm.

The postponement was attributed to political activities expected to take place at the stadium on the original matchday.

The encounter between Katsina United and Rivers United was also postponed because Rivers United are set to participate in the CAF Champions League. The Port Harcourt-based side will face FC San-Pédro of Côte d’Ivoire in the first qualifying round, with the first leg scheduled for Saturday, September 5 and the return leg set for Sunday, September 13.

Enyimba’s home fixture against Shooting Stars was similarly postponed due to the latter’s continental engagement. Shooting Stars are scheduled to host Tunisian club CS Sfaxien in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup first qualifying-round tie at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on Saturday, September 5, before travelling to Tunisia for the return leg on Sunday, September 13.

The fourth postponed fixture, Warri Wolves vs Enugu Rangers, was affected by Rangers’ participation in the CAF Champions League.

The Enugu-based club is scheduled to host AS Sobemap of Benin Republic on Sunday, September 6 before travelling for the second leg on Friday, September 11.

Meanwhile, the other five Matchday 2 fixtures are expected to go ahead on Sunday, September 6, with all matches scheduled to kick off at 4pm.

Plateau United will host Kwara United, Nasarawa United will face Bendel Insurance, Kun Khalifat FC will take on Barau FC, Ranchers Bees will welcome Abia Warriors, while Kano Pillars will play Niger Tornadoes.

While the NPFL has confirmed September 30 for the Sporting Lagos vs Ikorodu City encounter, new dates and kick-off times for Katsina United vs Rivers United, Enyimba vs Shooting Stars and Warri Wolves vs Enugu Rangers are yet to be announced.
