I Don’t Regret It” — Aisha Yesufu Explains Why She Voted APC In 2015
Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain Aisha Yesufu has explained why she does not regret voting for the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2015 presidential election, saying her decision was largely influenced by the choice of Yemi Osinbajo as the party’s vice-presidential candidate.
According to Ireporter Online, Yesufu made the disclosure during an interview on the Kaa Truth podcast, where she clarified that her decision to support the APC ticket was not primarily based on former President Muhammadu Buhari.
She said her support was influenced by expectations that Osinbajo would play a major role in managing the country’s economy if the APC won the election.
Yesufu argued that Buhari had a reputation for delegating responsibilities, citing his tenure as Nigeria’s military head of state when the late Tunde Idiagbon handled significant aspects of government administration.
“I didn’t vote for that ticket for Buhari but because of Pastor Yemi Osinbajo,” she said.
According to Yesufu, reports at the time suggested that Osinbajo would be given substantial responsibility for economic management under an APC administration. She said that expectation contributed significantly to her decision to vote for the party in 2015.
She also reflected on the political circumstances surrounding the election, arguing that the performance of the administration led by former President Goodluck Jonathan contributed to making the APC an acceptable alternative to many Nigerians.
Yesufu maintained that she does not regret her 2015 voting decision, despite her assessment of the country’s current political situation.
She explained that regretting the decision would suggest that Nigerians should simply accept present challenges out of fear that a future administration could perform worse.
Her comments have since sparked renewed discussion about the expectations surrounding the Buhari-Osinbajo ticket during the 2015 presidential election and whether those expectations were ultimately fulfilled.
