National Assembly Under Pressure As Lawmakers Decide On Rivers’ Emergency Rule Today

The National Assembly is set for a tense session today (Thursday) as lawmakers debate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The issue, initially scheduled for discussion on Wednesday, was postponed due to heated tensions in the House of Representatives. The Senate also delayed its debate, as it became apparent that securing the required two-thirds majority approval would be difficult. The matter is now set for discussion at 3 p.m. today.

Critical Deadline Approaches

According to the Nigerian Constitution, the National Assembly has 48 hours to either approve or reject the president’s emergency declaration. This deadline expires at midnight today (Thursday).

A major concern is the low attendance of lawmakers, as many have traveled to Saudi Arabia for Umrah (lesser hajj). Some lawmakers have called for their colleagues to return for the crucial vote.

Tinubu’s Justification for Emergency Rule

President Tinubu imposed the state of emergency following the escalation of political tensions in Rivers State. His declaration led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

In their place, Tinubu appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (Rtd.), as the new state administrator. The president officially inaugurated Ibas on Wednesday to assume his new role.

Lawmakers Divided on Decision

While some members of the National Assembly support Tinubu’s decision as a move to stabilize the state, others—including PDP lawmakers and opposition figures—have condemned it as an unconstitutional power grab.

The PDP Governors’ Forum has already pledged to challenge the decision in court, arguing that it sets a dangerous precedent and threatens Nigeria’s democracy.

What Happens Next?

• If the National Assembly approves the state of emergency, Fubara and his deputy will remain suspended for six months, and Ibas will continue governing Rivers State.
• If the lawmakers reject the declaration, Fubara may be reinstated, creating further political uncertainty.
