NYSC DG Highlights Health Risks Faced By Corps Members During Service

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that corps members receive high-quality healthcare throughout their service year.

According to a statement released by Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for the Scheme, General Nafiu highlighted the pivotal role of health insurance in safeguarding the well-being of corps members. He acknowledged the NHIA as a crucial partner in NYSC’s healthcare initiatives.

During the meeting, General Nafiu underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration between NYSC and NHIA to enhance support for corps members, stating, “Corps Welfare and Health is paramount to us in NYSC. We aim to improve our existing relationship for the benefit of our Corps Members.” He also expressed his intent to strengthen the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both organizations.

Expressing his gratitude to the NHIA leadership for its continuous support, General Nafiu reiterated his commitment to fostering a stronger partnership for the welfare of corps members.

In response, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri congratulated General Nafiu on his appointment and commended his dedication to improving corps members’ welfare. He noted that the NHIA remains open to forming strategic partnerships that enhance service delivery.

Dr. Ohiri highlighted that ongoing reforms at the NHIA, including the review of guidelines and accreditation of healthcare providers, are aimed at improving healthcare access for corps members. He assured that identified challenges would be addressed to ensure optimal healthcare services, stating, “We will ensure that our Corps Members do not lack access to the needed healthcare. Our joint committee will assess existing challenges and develop strategies for improvement.”

The meeting marked a significant step towards enhancing healthcare collaboration between the NYSC and NHIA, aimed at prioritizing the well-being of corps members during their service year.
