Potter Appointed Sweden Coach After Tomasson’s Sh*ck Dismissal

According to Ireporter Online, the Swedish Football Association has announced the appointment of English coach Graham Potter as the new head coach of the national football team following the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson.

Tomasson was relieved of his duties on October 14 after Sweden managed just one point from their opening four qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving the team rooted to the bottom of Group B and without a goal in their last three matches.

Potter, 50, who previously managed Chelsea, Brighton, and West Ham, will now take charge of efforts to revive Sweden’s struggling qualification campaign. His contract extends to the upcoming qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia in November and includes a clause for a potential playoff in March. Should Sweden qualify, the agreement will automatically continue through the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

In a statement, the Swedish Football Association expressed optimism about the appointment, noting that the primary goal is to “create the optimal conditions to reach the World Cup in the summer of 2026.”

Reacting to his appointment, Potter described the role as both humbling and inspiring. “I am very humbled by this assignment but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who perform week after week in the world’s best leagues,” he said.

Despite boasting attacking stars such as Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden’s recent performances have lacked creativity and consistency.

Potter’s appointment also marks a symbolic return to familiar territory. He previously managed Swedish club Östersund FK between 2011 and 2018, where he earned acclaim for leading the modest side from the lower leagues to European competition.

Following his successful spell in Sweden, Potter went on to manage Swansea City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, and most recently West Ham United, from which he was dismissed in September.

Now back in Sweden, Potter faces the dual challenge of rebuilding both his managerial reputation and the national team’s World Cup hopes.
