Rivers Lawmakers Pull Back Appeal Cases Against Fubara And Deputy

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have officially withdrawn appeal suits filed against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, following what lawmakers described as presidential intervention and renewed constitutional assurances from the state executive.

According to Ireporter Online, the decision was formalized in a resolution signed on Thursday by Dr. Enemi George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints. George stated that the resolution came after agreements reached during a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 8, 2026.

He explained that both the governor and his deputy committed to refraining from actions that could contravene the Constitution and laws of Rivers State, and to promptly rectify any prior breaches. The Notice of Discontinuance of suits OYHC/7/CS/2026 and OYHC/6/CS/2026 was subsequently filed on February 17, 2026.

As a demonstration of goodwill and respect for the President, the lawmakers withdrew the two matters pending before the Court of Appeal – Appeal No. CA/PH/3/2026 and Appeal No. CA/PH/32/2026 – on February 18, 2026. George emphasized that the governor and deputy governor pledged strict compliance with constitutional provisions going forward.

The lawmaker expressed confidence that the commitments would be honored, noting that adherence would reinforce the rule of law and promote stability within the state. During Thursday’s plenary session, the House also resolved to halt impeachment proceedings previously initiated against Governor Fubara and Prof. Odu.

George concluded by thanking the people of Rivers State for their support and prayers, while commending President Tinubu for his leadership and mediation in resolving the matter.
