According to official sources, the Zamfara State House of Assembly has suspended two local government chairmen over alleged financial misappropriation, signaling a push for stronger accountability and transparency in the state. The affected officials are Mannir Mu’azu Haidara of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area and Umar A. Faru of Bukkuyum Local Government Area.

The suspension follows a report by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, presented during plenary on Wednesday by Deputy Speaker Adamu Aliyu Gumm, who also serves as the committee’s vice chairman. The House spokesperson, Bello Kurya, stated that lawmakers unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations under the leadership of Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki.

Kurya explained that the action was taken due to the chairmen’s failure to appear before the committee to clarify how funds allocated to their councils were spent. “The invitations were issued to enable them to provide explanations regarding the expenditure of funds,” Kurya said, noting that their refusal was considered a serious breach of legislative oversight responsibilities.

The Assembly indicated that the suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the financial activities of the state’s 14 local government councils for the 2025 fiscal year. The suspended chairmen have been instructed to hand over their duties to their respective vice chairmen without delay.

Kurya further stated that the disciplinary measures were prompted by findings of “disrespect to the legislative institution” and concerns over transparency and accountability in public fund management. He added that the Assembly has forwarded its resolutions to the executive arm of the government for implementation, reaffirming its commitment to prudent resource management and good governance in Zamfara State.
