BREAKING: NDC Moves To Officially Ratify Peter Obi As Presidential Candidate Today
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is expected to officially ratify former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate today, Friday, during the party’s nationwide primaries.
According to reports, Obi is poised to secure the party’s ticket unopposed after emerging as the sole aspirant for the presidential race ahead of the 2027 general election.
The party is also expected to conduct governorship, National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly primaries and affirmations across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja, explaining that some preparatory arrangements suffered setbacks due to transportation and logistical challenges linked to the Eid-el-Kabir holidays.
He noted that several aspirants and members of the party’s screening committees were stranded in Abuja following the scarcity of available flights and other travel difficulties.
Cleopas, however, maintained that the primaries would proceed as scheduled on May 29, 2026, in line with the party’s original timetable for May 28 and 29 activities.
He explained that the exercise would commence with the presidential affirmation before proceeding to National Assembly, State Assembly and governorship primaries or affirmations nationwide.
The party further directed that all results from the states be transmitted directly to the national headquarters for official announcement by the National Working Committee, stressing that no state executive or team has been authorised to independently declare results.
The statement also warned security agencies and state institutions, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), against involvement in activities outside the party’s approved guidelines.
Cleopas urged aspirants and party members to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the exercise, warning that the NDC would not tolerate violence, disorderliness or any form of hooliganism during the primaries.
