23rd Presby General Assembly Set To Elect New Moderator To Succeed Rt. Rev Prof. J.O.Y. Mante
The 23rd General Assembly, the highest decision-making body of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), is convening to elect a new Moderator who will succeed Rt. Rev Prof. J.O.Y. Mante.
The General Assembly is a pivotal annual event where commissioners gather to shape the church’s agenda, prioritize its development, and evaluate leadership stewardship, financial standing, and ministry statistics.
Divided into two parts, the week-long meeting commenced on August 9 with virtual workshops for ministers. The second part, held in-person, is scheduled from August 16 to August 20.
The opening ceremony will welcome esteemed guests including government officials, chiefs, a Nigerian delegation led by Dr Ekpenyong N. Akpanika, Prelate and Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Nigeria, and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who will serve as the guest speaker.
Additionally, the assembly will recognize individuals who have notably contributed to both the church and society.
The Moderator holds a significant spiritual role, overseeing the entire church, speaking on its behalf, and presiding over various meetings, including those of the General Assembly Council.
The 23rd General Assembly’s focal point is the election of a successor to the outgoing Moderator, Rt. Rev Prof Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mantey, whose five-year term concludes in November 2023. The newly elected Moderator will take office in December.

Among the church’s 1,500 ministers, 145 qualify for Moderator candidacy. Eligibility criteria mandate a minimum of 15 years’ service as an ordained minister, an age range of 50 to 65 years due to the five-year term and the retirement age of 70, and alignment with the constitution’s first schedule.
The Clerk of the General Assembly, Rev Dr Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor, confirmed the readiness of the assembly, which will witness the important transition of leadership.
