Osimhen Sounds Warning To Galatasaray Ahead Of Barcelona Champions League Clash
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has cautioned Galatasaray against getting carried away ahead of their UEFA Champions League encounter with Barcelona, describing the Spanish club as a side packed with quality players.
The Nigerian international made the remarks ahead of Tuesday’s meeting between the two clubs, acknowledging the importance of the fixture while stressing that Galatasaray must be fully prepared for the challenge.
According to reports, Osimhen expressed excitement about facing Barcelona but warned his teammates that the quality of the opposition meant they could not afford to approach the game with excessive confidence.
“Barcelona is a very big team. You shouldn’t be happy about playing against them, because they have very quality players. It will help us both as a team and individually. I’m happy for matches like this. It will be a great match,” the striker reportedly said.
Osimhen spoke after returning from a groin injury during Galatasaray’s 3-1 victory over Kasımpaşa in the Turkish Super Lig. He came on as a substitute and provided the assist for Mario Lemina’s stoppage-time goal to complete the win at RAMS Park.
Galatasaray had taken the lead through Abdülkerim Bardakcı before Jesurun Rak-Sakyi equalised for Kasımpaşa. Barış Alper Yılmaz restored the hosts’ advantage late in the match before Lemina scored in the 96th minute.
The Turkish champions were also reduced to 10 men after Lucas Torreira received a red card in the 65th minute.
Osimhen welcomed the opportunity to feature in another Champions League fixture at RAMS Park, where he has experienced several European nights since joining Galatasaray.
The striker has previous experience against Barcelona from his time at Napoli. He scored in a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their 2024 Champions League round-of-16 tie, but Napoli lost the return fixture 3-1 and were eliminated.
Galatasaray head into the upcoming encounter looking to recover from a 3-1 defeat away to Sporting CP in their opening Champions League fixture. Barcelona, meanwhile, started their campaign with a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord.
The Turkish side also face a challenging historical record against Barcelona, having recorded one victory, two draws and five defeats in eight previous meetings between the clubs in the Champions League.
Osimhen’s comments underline the need for Galatasaray to approach the fixture with discipline and focus as they prepare to take on one of European football’s most established clubs.
