Abia State. Ikwechegh was granted bail of N500,000 after his arraignment on Wednesday before His Worship, Abubakar Umar Saiāid. He pleaded not guilty to charges of allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, charged Ikwechegh with three counts, including abuse of office, assault, and threat to life. Following his plea, his lawyer made an oral bail application, which the court granted.
In a video circulating online, Ikwechegh is seen slapping the driver repeatedly and threatening to make him “disappear without a trace.” A civil society organization, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), condemned his actions, describing them as a clear abuse of power typical among politicians. RULAACās Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, stated that this incident reflects poorly on the House of Representatives and raises concerns about police impartiality.
He added that this incident must drive reforms to enforce respect for human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for justice for Abuwatseya and other victims of similar abuse.
