Abia State Government Delays Civil Service Recruitment, Prioritizes Addressing Existing Challenges

Otti reiterated the employment embargo that his administration had implemented, emphasizing its continuation. He expressed concern about the high number of individuals already employed in the civil service despite ongoing verification processes.

Highlighting the significant monthly wage bill of approximately four billion naira for both local government and state employees, Governor Otti assured that efforts were being made to improve the remuneration of civil servants.

Governor Otti acknowledged the presence of underperforming employees within the civil service and indicated that measures would be taken to address this issue.

He stated, “So, it may not be a priority at this time to open up the doors to bring in new people, except if we have a way of exiting a few people. But you know, with the civil service rules, it is not going to be very easy to exit people.”

Governor Otti highlighted the establishment of the Civil Service Commission, the appointment of a new Head of Service, and new Permanent Secretaries as steps to ensure that existing civil servants receive adequate training to enhance their skills and performance.

The announcement underscores the government’s commitment to streamlining the civil service and improving efficiency before considering recruitment.
