The Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, has called for a disciplined, evidence-driven pathway to sustainable prosperity in Nigeria’s South-East, as Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive and coordinated regional development.

The remarks were delivered at the South-East Vision 2050 Stakeholders’ Summit in Enugu, attended by the governors of Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Abia States, with Imo State represented by the Speaker of its House of Assembly. Senior diplomats, traditional rulers, development partners, and key stakeholders were also present, highlighting the national significance of the engagement.

Convened within the framework of the South-East Development Commission’s long-term planning process and opened by the Vice President on behalf of the President, the summit underscored firm federal backing for structured regional transformation. Institutional leadership for the dialogue was provided by the Commission’s Chairman, Emeka Wogu, and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mark Okoye.

In his address, Minister Momoh described the forum as a decisive shift from fragmented, short-term interventions toward coordinated development anchored on data, inclusion, and shared ownership. He noted that while the region holds strong advantages in enterprise, agriculture, technology, and human capital, structural challenges such as infrastructure gaps, unemployment, and security concerns require disciplined long-term planning.

The minister further revealed ongoing federal consideration of reviving regional commodity ecosystems to position products such as palm oil and Abakaliki rice for global export, in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on productive growth and shared prosperity.

Vice President Shettima reaffirmed that balanced regional development remains central to national stability and economic expansion, stressing federal readiness to support investments and governance frameworks capable of unlocking the South-East’s full potential.

Stakeholders at the summit agreed that the South-East Vision 2050 initiative represents not just a policy plan, but a generational roadmap capable of redefining the region’s development trajectory and serving as a national model for evidence-driven regional planning.
