leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja. According to Naija News, Kanu has been held in DSS custody since June 2021, following his disputed extradition from Kenya. His legal team has persistently accused the DSS of obstructing access, prompting the court on October 17 to warn DSS Director-General Adeola Ajayi of possible jail time for continued denial.

In a follow-up hearing, the court ordered the DSS DG to appear and justify the ongoing denial, reportedly directed by SSS leadership. Judge Binta Nyako had previously mandated that Kanu be granted visitation three days a week under specific conditions for trial preparation. However, DSS sources argue that the order applies only to active trial preparation, which they claim is currently on hold.

Kanu’s lawyer, Nnaemeka Ejiofor, criticized the DSS’s position as “childish,” contending that court orders do not lapse unless overturned by another court order and arguing that restricting access while the trial is delayed hampers necessary preparation. Ejiofor further stated that if the DSS views the court’s order as expired due to Justice Nyako’s temporary recusal, Kanu’s detention itself would be equally baseless, thus making his continued confinement unlawful.
