Scheduled for Tuesday, February 27, and Wednesday, February 28, the NLC’s protest aims to address the soaring prices of essential commodities triggered by the removal of fuel subsidies and the drastic depreciation of the national currency.

In the missive dated February 24, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Falana, invoked Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act, emphasizing the Minister of Justice’s authority to ensure adequate security for protesters.

Expressing his counsel for peaceful rallies, Falana’s letter articulated, “While we have advised the members of the NLC to conduct the rallies scheduled for February 27-28, 2024, in a peaceful manner, we urge you to use your good offices to direct the Inspector-General of Police to provide adequate security to the conveners and participants in the protest in line with the provisions of Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act.”

He concluded with a respectful call for the Attorney General’s favorable response, extending the assurance of utmost esteem in anticipation of proactive measures to protect the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
