Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed strong confidence in the party’s ability to reclaim the Edo governorship seat in the upcoming election on September 21. Speaking to journalists at the Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel, Ganduje highlighted that the APC, originally the ruling party in Edo, has implemented robust political strategies to ensure its victory. He emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader plan to strengthen the party’s influence, particularly in the Southeast, with Anambra being the initial focus. Ganduje reiterated the APC’s ambition to increase the number of states it governs across Nigeria.

No Security Threat in Niger State, Says Police

The Niger State Police Command has assured residents that there is no imminent threat of attack, following the recent discovery and destruction of explosive devices in the state. Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun clarified that the explosives, which were dismantled as a precautionary measure, were outdated materials from previous operations. He dismissed reports of a critical security threat as false, urging the public to go about their daily activities without fear. Commissioner of Police Shawulu Danmamman emphasized the commitment of security agencies to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

Tinubu Mourns with Former Defence Minister Over Wife’s Death

President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolences to Professor Iya Abubakar, a former Minister of Defence, following the passing of his wife, Hajiya Ummu Abubakar. Hajiya Abubakar, who was also the mother-in-law of National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, died in Abuja at the age of 78. In his message, Tinubu praised her for her devotion to God and her commitment to family values. He urged the family to continue honoring her legacy and uphold her good name.

Plateau Assembly Shortens Tenure of Local Government Officials

The Plateau State House of Assembly has passed an amendment reducing the tenure of elected local government officials from three years to two. This change is part of the newly amended Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) Law of 2024. The amendment follows the recent granting of financial autonomy to local governments and was driven by a bill sponsored by Joseph Gokum. The reduction in tenure aims to enhance the adaptability of local governance and improve oversight, allowing for more effective management of financial autonomy and addressing potential challenges more efficiently.
