During the “Road to Schuman Forum on Security and Defence,” organized by the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in collaboration with the EU, Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru highlighted the interconnected nature of global security challenges.
Badaru, represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, emphasized that insecurity anywhere in the world impacts other nations, stressing that even a modest allocation of resources, similar to those directed to regions like Ukraine, could greatly bolster Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and banditry.
Expressing concern that Africa’s security challenges often receive insufficient attention compared to conflicts elsewhere, Badaru underscored the importance of collective efforts to address emerging security threats across Nigeria and the ECOWAS region.
Major General Adamu Garba Laka, the National Coordinator of NCTC, emphasized the necessity of collaborative actions from stakeholders and partners to tackle security challenges effectively.
Ambassador Samuela Isopi, head of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria, described the meeting as an opportunity to gather insights and assessments on peace, security, and defense challenges facing Nigeria and its regional environment.
The event precedes the Schuman Security and Defence Forum scheduled for May 28 and 29, 2024, in Brussels, Belgium, where Nigeria will engage with EU member states, partner countries, and international organizations to discuss and shape security and defense collaborations.
