Binance Exit Could Exacerbate Youth Unemployment, Crypto Traders Warns

In interviews with The PUNCH, these experts urged the government to seek alternative solutions to manage Nigeria’s foreign exchange challenges effectively.
Shedrach Israel, an economist at Lotus Beta Analytics, likened the government’s move to “treating malaria with paracetamol.” He argued that the ban on Binance would not address the root cause of the falling value of the naira, emphasizing that cryptocurrency is not the primary conduit for dollar inflows into Nigeria.
Israel urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to scrutinize the forex holdings of top Nigerian politicians, suggesting that converting their foreign currency reserves to naira could be more effective in stabilizing the economy.
Meanwhile, cryptocurrency trader John Odiba acknowledged both negative and positive impacts of Binance’s exit. While he warned of potential liquidity challenges and limited access to certain cryptocurrencies for Nigerian users, he also highlighted the opportunity for local exchanges to flourish, offering tailored services to meet users’ needs.
However, for individuals like Godwin Ojonugwa, whose livelihood depends on Binance’s peer-to-peer trade, the ban has already taken a toll. Ojonugwa expressed fears of losing his source of income and emphasized the significant role Binance played in funding his education and housing.
The unfolding situation underscores the complex dynamics surrounding cryptocurrency regulation in Nigeria and its potential socio-economic ramifications, particularly for the country’s youth population. As stakeholders navigate these challenges, there’s a pressing need for holistic approaches that balance regulatory oversight with fostering innovation and economic empowerment.
