Biosafety Agency Alleviates GMO Concerns, Promotes Transparent Information

The National Biosafety Management Agency has intensified efforts to combat the widespread misinformation and myths surrounding Genetically Modified Organisms in Nigeria.

Speaking at the Agricultural Biosafety/Biotech Communication Workshop titled, “Strategic Communication Training for Influencers/Reporters on Biosafety/Biotech Regulations,” in Abuja on Tuesday, the NBMA Director-General/CEO, Dr Agnes Asagbra, emphasised the need for accurate communication on biotechnology and biosafety issues.

GMOs are organisms whose genetic materials have been altered through biotechnology to introduce new traits, such as pest resistance, environmental tolerance, improved nutrition, among others.

These modifications result in more resilient and sustainable crops, as well as innovative medical treatments and vaccines. Examples include modified corn, soybeans, salmon, and bacteria, although their use has sparked controversy and debate.

Asagbra underscored the importance of educating the public to combat the pervasive myths and misinterpretations about GMOs in the country.

“Because there has been a lot of misinformation, misinterpretation, and all manner of myths put out there, we decided that we needed to have a communication programme for journalists and influencers,” she explained.

The programme, a joint initiative by the United States Department of Agriculture and NBMA, aimed to equip participants with the knowledge necessary to convey the benefits and safety of modern biotechnology to the public.

Addressing the controversy surrounding GMOs in Nigeria, Asagbra pointed out that biosafety is not well understood by many.

“Biosafety is not well known. That is why we need to educate people because it is very easy to spread the wrong message,” she noted.

The NBMA boss highlighted the vital role of biotechnology in advancing scientific progress, stressing its potential to enhance agricultural productivity and contribute to the nation’s food security goals.

She also cited the success stories of GMOs, including their ability to reduce insect infestation, improve drought tolerance, and enhance salt tolerance, which ultimately helps farmers overcome challenges in food production.

These benefits, she emphasised, align with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda for achieving food security in Nigeria.

In response to concerns about the safety of GMOs, Asagbra acknowledged that, like all technologies, biotechnology carries certain risks.

However, she reassured the public that NBMA’s mandate is to ensure the safe use of biotechnology in the country.

“There is nothing in the world that is zero risk. Everything has risks,” she remarked, drawing comparisons with other industries such as telecommunications and medicine, where risks are managed to ensure public safety.

Speaking at the event, Agricultural Counselor at the USDA, Christopher Bielecki, said, “We believe advancements in agricultural biotechnology, coupled with a science-based, transparent, and timely regulatory framework, can give farmers more tools to produce food, which will help not just drive economic empowerment for farmers and rural communities, but also reduce food insecurity in Nigeria.”

The training is part of Nigeria’s broader quest to achieve its biotechnology and biosafety goals.
