BREAKING: 29 Soldiers Killed In Niger
On Monday night, the defense ministry announced that twenty-nine soldiers were tragically lost in a suspected jihadist attack in western Niger. The nation has declared a three-day period of national mourning in their honor.
According to a televised statement from the ministry, the soldiers were targeted using “improvised explosive devices and kamikaze vehicles by more than a hundred terrorists.” Two soldiers sustained serious injuries, and “several dozen terrorists” were also reported to have been killed.
This devastating attack occurred near the border with Mali, as part of military operations aimed at neutralizing the threat posed by the Islamic State in the region, as stated by the ministry. The statement further noted that communications from the withdrawing terrorists had been intercepted, and that the attackers had received outside expertise, though specific details were not provided.
A persistent jihadist insurgency has afflicted the Sahel region of Africa for over a decade, originating in northern Mali in 2012 before spreading to neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso in 2015.
The “three borders” area, situated between Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, frequently experiences attacks by militants affiliated with groups such as the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda.
This violence has contributed to military takeovers in all three countries, with Niger being the most recent to experience a coup on July 26, resulting in the removal of Mohamed Bazoum, the democratically elected president. In August, another attack by suspected jihadists claimed the lives of at least 17 Nigerien soldiers and left 20 others wounded near the border between Niger and Burkina Faso.
